I think by volunteering you have more of a chance of going to one of your choice areas if it is not a highly requested area or there is not an over-abundance of recruiters in that area. Some parts of the country currently have enough recruiters, and have people who are already recruiters (permanent 79R MOS) trying to transfer to those places (think major tourist destinations & southeastern part of country). Also, keep in mind if there is an area that has a significant NEED for recruiters – well – then you might end up somewhere you never even thought you would go. Either way – you will still have to have some idea of the brigades you’d like to go to, three battalions within each brigade, and three companies within each battalion. Check out the USAREC website and look at the map they have there and start getting familiar with the brigades, battalions, and companies. Talk with your husband about the choices available and where you would like to go – and then talk about the places you wouldn’t mind going if you had to – and then talk about the places you do not want to go to.
As for us – we did not get one of the places we wanted to go – but I can’t complain too much because even though our family is mostly in the South – I do have family in California. Also, I am thankful we are going somewhere it does not get too cold – I don’t like snow (for Christmas and around the holidays is fine, but after New Years it’s depressing – and I would freak if I had to drive in it). Your best bet is to start talking about it now before he goes that way he has an idea and can make a decision on the spot if he has to that you both can live with.

thanks for the info, girl.
My husband and I actually didnt want to go to California because we know how expensive it is to live there. Have you experienced or know of people dealing with this problem?
I’m nervous about the assignment choice procedure. i read on a forum that a lot of people in this persons recruiting class got their first choice… So I got happy, but now that I read this post… I’m a bit more pessimistic.
I wonder what are some assignment places that are just nearly impossible to get so I can go ahead and strike them off of the list.
